You are absolutely right. If we then and they now weren't oppressed in the first place we wouldn't be oppressed now either. But we are told that those in power are protecting the rights of those under a certain age by taking them away without their consent because they are too young to give it. It's as if those in power have been reading a little too much Lewis Carroll and have identified with the Queen Of Hearts rather than Alice!
