It is all too real, unfortunately. I am also pretty sure that Dante did not mean to suggest that this is the only possibility, merely that it is a likely one and - more to the point - the fact that societal views insist that certain things be considered abusive makes it extremely difficult to separate fact from fiction.
Have you read my essay that I linked, that provided a clear and documented example of memories being shaped by changing societal views over time?
