" 'victimised by societal views' is tired nonsense."

Wow. You really do believe, despite all evidence to the contrary, that the mind is immune from flaw or bias in processing and interpreting information and memory.

I would think, then, that Sociology would be a dead-field if society's views were never internalized.

But the truth is quite the opposite.

We structure our experiences so that they aren't a rather random assemblage of sensory impressions. Part of that structure is necessarily a narrative; a story we tell ourselves.

To some degree that story is unique and to some degree that story is cultural.

My brother's divorce ( and subsequent relationship without wedlock ) is;

A: A mortal sin.

B: Evidence of bad-character

C: My family's dishonor

D: His own business

E: Evidence of his learning curve

You yourself argue that memories linked to strong emotion have more staying power. ( I doubt that anyone argues with that; but staying power and accuracy are very different things. )

And yet the latter two reactions ( from a secular Western perspective where matters of responsibility are individual rather than collective ) are MUCH more tepid emotionally. They are, by your account, going to be recalled differently.

BTW, You really need to familiarize yourself with Susan Clancy's work on the trauma model and its applicability to so-called child sexual abuse. She has nothing but concern for her clients. And finds that the misapplication of the trauma model has actually prevented those who needed help from coming forward to receive it.
