I would say that, going by the sender's letter, it pretty much hints that it was not abuse, only reinterpreted as abuse and that any harm here is sociogenic. Presumably the girl was much more (at least, much more often) "abused" and yet she turned out better than all right; while the sender is the one who hasn't.

I'm guessing that the friend was raised in a more sexually permissive household and therefore wasn't made to feel as much shame as this woman, who felt like she was keeping a deep, dark secret from her own family when she had sex with their family. And this is only reinforced by society at large, whereas the friend at least had/has a subculture that didn't instill that feeling into her, at least not to that large an extent.
