This is one area where I agree with you and others here completely: some of it is cultural but the fact is, girls have a genetic propensity towards caring about looks in themselves because males have a genetic propensity for caring about looks in females. These propensities no doubt evolved in union. Males desire young, pretty (read: healthy) females to better assure their offspring will be healthy. And this interest young girls have in being pretty far precedes the media and the "thin and sexy" culture.

Note the word earliest in there, referring to the fact that even little girls worry about their appearance.
