I will go ahead and say it is not all a negative thing, not in an age when obesity is high and rising in many countries. What's more convincing? A PSA featuring the First Lady telling you to eat more veggies; or knowing your pants no longer fit the waist you had just a couple months ago?

OTOH, yes, it's impossible to deny there are negative effects, and that many times girls do not consider themselves "pretty" or "hot" despite the lack of "rational" reason to think they're not. That's where there is a need to unfocus from beauty or to discover any underlying reasons for low self-esteem.

What I am not sure I agree with is that this is so much different from girlhood in the past. Today girls focus on body image because pretty faces and hot bodies attract men in this society - where household economics allow men to live alone with a better quality of life than at any time before, allow women not to specialize as housewives and still live well, and where procreation has a low value for both sexes. Yesterday, while physical beauty would be desirable, it would certainly be trumped by being a good wife and housewife, and a good mother - and girls would focus on that, because that would attract more men, and a better sort of men, than disregarding housewife and mother abilities to focus more on physical beauty. So I would say, "mixed blessing"...
