"God" is a general purpose word, used for both monotheistic and polytheistic religions. It has a multitude of meanings and interpretations - in some regions great men are regularly deemed to be gods, though not in any way in the sense of "god" as used in the monotheistic religions.

The monotheistic religions have attempted to monopolize use of the word, capitalizing it to ensure that no one confuses the "real" god with the many pretenders. Some Jews use "G-d" so as to honor their religious obligation not to say his name, even though "god" was never the name of the Jewish god.

And of course as Dante has noted, there is a scifi convention to use "Ghod" for a similar purpose, so as not to somehow blaspheme by not using quite the same word as many think is the name.

As a result, the best choice may not be an alternate spelling but an alternate word - such as "the Universe", "the Universal Consciousness" or even the Native American inspired "The Great Spirit". I am sure there are more, but this is not my area of expertise. Although many writers have used a generic "God" for this purpose, in an attempt to unify disparate groups by using vague and undefined language that can apply to them all, it may be more useful to come up with some other word for your purpose.
