Oh, if you cannot afford a defense that complicates the idea to force the system to run the accusation through.

Still a complete denial is the advisable thing, but it would have helped to have had legal help beforehand instead of a public defender that has you and a hundred cases more, and who probably will recommend the plea bargain anyway because it saves everyone time and avoids the chances of a circus trial which would worsen your chances before a jury (which public defenders are often loath to be in)...

Also, as Baldur said, although that's unconstitutional, sex crimes have previously seen their statutes of limitation extended, and I think 20 years is possibly within it, given today's standards. Also, it's common-ish not to have them extended directly, but by setting the start date not from the alleged act's date, but from the day she turned 18. That also seems to make it possible to charge you.

In that case, I'd have to say you're better off ignoring the accusations and hoping that they go away. But you have no way of knowing if they will.
