You didn't know any of that? Really? Really really really didn't know any of that?

I will add that, except for the sextastic character of the Olympic Villages, all of the rest is the fault of the IOC's highly authoritarian structure and pretty retrograde ethos. Most of what is wrong with the Olympics could easily be solved by using a lot of common sense and free market approaches. But fat chance getting such an institution as the IOC to change in that direction.
