Oh, they have.

The "subliminal" hooey was a boondoggle. But they invested a lot of time and money on that before the studies showed that it had no effect.

Most of advertising is about awareness. Some of it is about shaping choices which will already be made. But there is very little ability to make the guy who is lactose intolerant want to eat yoghurt. Or sell Homosexual Pronz to Str8s.
