The trend predates the Internet ( as it is ) by a long ways.

All the Internet has done is prove that the small "they" caught-up in mail-order CP stings ( where the Govt was the only source recirculating the stuff ) actually represents everyone's friends, neighbors and relatives.

There are many who don't believe that the hysteria will truly crest until everyone knows someone who has a loved one who has been branded for life by the draconian laws. And we aren't there yet.
