Thank you, Sir Baldur. This was a subject that on various occasions I turned over in my head for a while without feeling satisfied that I'd come to any better understanding. This post has helped me get a more comfortable handle on it.

Yes! I wish more people would consciously recognize this, and furthermore, recognize that people who take and sustain and interest in the well-being and development of children (or a particular child) are likely doing so for reasons beyond arbitrary altruism.
