Funny, Ethan already defined them as indistinguishable when he talked about concealed asymmetrical benefits as "ulterior motive" and said that he needed to know states of mind through a psychic machine before allowing touch for children.

Who knows what others are getting off on? In my world, who cares? In his, the possibility that somebody somewhere is having fun becomes a reason to isolate the kids.

But then again, he prefers his analogies and illustrations to be so unrealistic as to only be used in proving his points but not in disproof. Therefore us playing connect-the-dots is probably very unfair, even if its what the rest of us expect when we pick a metaphor.
