There was a recent unpublished survey of 200-odd sex researchers, most with no special interest in pedophilia. The results have some bearing on your questions.

On the question of whether most pedophiles have sexual contact with children, 6% said yes, 35% were not sure, and 59% said no. They recognize that people like us exist.

But this was no group of radicals, either. 58% thought the age of consent should be at 16 or above.

Of some further interest, 62% felt children were typically greatly harmed by sexual contact with adults. In the case of adolescents, 66% thought the main cause was societal reaction, while only 32% thought that for children.

80% said pedophiles deserve sympathy, 10% not sure, and 10% no. And 27% said it was a mental illness, 19% weren't sure, and 55% said no.

That may not be quite the same thing as "social liberals", but it's some kind of approximation.

Like Kyubee, I think that murder of non-offending pedophiles is very rare and makes the news just because it is so rare. And I also think that a large element for most people saying what they'd like to do to us is letting off steam.
