It has to do with this hypothesis. Often the spanking is on the behind, which can mix pleasure and pain. Also many parents do a whole "spank then act loving" which was shown to increase sado-masochistic desires than just spanking and then not acting loving. Straus suggests it might be cross wiring these kids pleasure pain more so than normal.
