Oh, but these are perfectly consistent things!
There are plenty of traditional societies where the haves marry their first wife at 13 with brideprice paid by daddy, and set upon reproducing, whereas the have-nots work till 30 or 50 to scrape together a brideprice, or never get a brideprice at all, or are castrated and sent to guard the harems of those who have them.

Eliminating the distinction between the haves and the have nots is done exactly by limiting every man to one wife, even though they could afford several, and forcing involuntary celibacy on all teenagers even if they could safely afford a baby, or avoid conceiving it.
