The Michelson Morley Experiment is one of the greatest epic phail in science history.

Everything was starting to unify and come together. The last piece to find was the luminiferous aether; that medium that light waves move through in the "vacuum" of space.

So they devised a method for measuring the foreshortening of light as the Earth moves through this medium and displaces it.

.......

No finding. No aether.

Sci-Fi writer Philip K. Dick once proposed that this was because the Earth was moving WITH the aether. And they should set up the Michelson Morley Experiment on the Moon to test this hypothesis. :)
