Presuming the parents are not totally abusive, the biggest thing is reminding kids that yes, although they may not express it well and may make bad decisions, their parents do love them and are trying to teach them and protect them as best they know how. Otherwise, help them understand why adults make the decisions they make, if this is possible.

Parents may not appreciate this, but most kids do.
