I remember much the same. A sense of betrayal, especially with how much my parents and other adults used it to manipulate me.

I often heard something similar, that the Santa lie is good for kids critical thinking, but this can easily be developed and cultivated without lying to your kids. I find it is just a way for parents to excuse the lie once they realize they are lying.
