If all the people who hate Hellary but aren't enthusiastic about Trump, and all the people who hate Trump but aren't enthusiastic about Hellary, voted for someone else, then someone else would win.

The American system is actually very forgiving with minorities. The chance to fight for an election just by winning key states even without having 50% of the national vote is a lot better than the Latin systems where the only way to fight is win outright or the European systems where you have to lead the biggest parliamentary bloc. Teddy Roosevelt, George Wallace, Ross Perot... they all had true good chances only because of the American system. And this is why Johnson cannot yet be discarded.
