If you think Putin is like Hitler, then everyone is like Hitler. Hitler was more dangerous than the many authoritarian and megalomaniac leaders from everywhere throughout history on account of two things: first, technology: Germany in the 1930s being more technologically advanced than Genghis' Mongolia, and Germany in particular being one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world; and second, ideology: Hitler and the Nazis choosing the pursuit of ideological goals over and above the consolidation and extension of their power (before being elected they were less ideological, see "Night of the Long Knives", but by the moment they chose to invade the USSR instead of tightening the nooze around Britain...). But without technology (both absolute, as in technological capability to kill; and relative, as in capabilities compared to those of rivals) authoritarianism is only dangerous to its subjects; and if ideology does not override the concern with power, then megalomaniac leaders can be contained through negotiations, bribed into getting along, or exhausted by a protracted war into giving up. Putin is no Hitler. Neither is Assad. Neither are the Ayatollahs in Iran. Neither are the Venezuelan Communists. Neither was Saddam. Neither was Qaddafi. Neither is Trump. And not even the Kim dynasty are. In the contemporary world, the only threat even on the league is Daesh. Because unlike all of the above, Daesh, like the Nazis, prioritize ideological goals over holding and increasing power, ![]() Cuteness is to die for Cuteness cannot fail Cuteness knows no limit Cuteness will prevail |
