The Green Party, I think, will never be a factor. They are too idealistic and contrary to the majority view. Idealism, my friend, is a quality of youth that I fully support, and believe is necessary to convince people that a better world and fundamental change are both possible, and that change is not always bad and should be embraced as a necessary component of both life and history. We disparage it at our peril, which is why our adult-controlled world has created such a mess of the world. And I totally disagree also that the Greens are contrary to the majority of opinion. The majority of working class people want what the Greens are fighting for: universal health care; a more sustainable environment; free higher education; forgiveness for the massive college debt now plaguing Americans; less police brutality and community regulation of local police forces; social programs that elevate the poor rather than denigrate them; an end to the disparities of wealth that causes so much poverty and crime. The fact that the two major parties control the media creates the illusion that the public wants what the wealthy few want; don't buy into that. Look at what the polls actually say. The Libertarian Party, at least, is on the right side of history on a great many issues, such as marijuana and privacy rights. They struggle to put forth electable candidates (after all, what true Libertarian seeks power over others?), Yes... on civil rights issues. But unfortunately, not on economic issues. And frankly, my friend, asking "What true libertarian wants power over others?" is contrary to the economic order that they support, where those more money have tremendous power over those who do not. Their choice of defining "freedom" in the economic sphere compromises everything their civil rights stances promote. A class-divided society will always enable the few at the top of the economic food chain to operate outside of the laws that are supposed to be applied equally to everyone. but under the right circumstances they might replace either major party we have today. If socialists and Greens have anything to say about, they'll join the two major parties in the hell populated by corporatists where they belong. They just need to get a cogent foreign policy platform because the world is getting too crowded and too interdependent to ignore. Isolationism, while desirable and ideologically pure, is just not possible, and frankly incompatible with their other free market ideals. You know that I believe free market ideals are incompatible with civil rights ideals because of the natural power disparities they create and thrive on. Now that I have returned, the libertarians on this board can look forward to me being me and providing massive opposition, alongside Sea Goddess, Rach, and the others who want a world truly free of inequality. I hope you look forward to it as much as I do :-P |
