There already was an energy source with none of oil's problems of being unclean, unsafe, and carbon leaking, which is cheap (because the technology is well developed and it has a very long life), and which didn't give too much power and influence to one of the most totalitarian countries on earth.

And Green politicians destroyed it.

By this time, even cars could be nuclear powered. If it weren't for Green parties and Green lobbies...
