Some of that is certainly due to cultural differences between the Anglosphere and France.
However, at the root of all is that people are complex and interaction is never identical between two people. Both from the viewpoint and choice of being persistent, or not and how; and from those of how to react to perceived over aggressiveness on being hit on; there are no simple answers. Both parties may mismeasure and either over or under react. I know I don't want a world where every advance is interpreted as 75% of a rape. I don't want either a world where blackmail, threat and coercion are considered valid ways to propose, least of all when they are backed by the exercize of power over the proposed. Conversely, I don't want a world where a consistently abusive MO is let go off the hook; but neither do I want a world where not just every advance is demonized (and because of which, true behavior changes over time are also not acknowledged) but word versus word testimonies decades after the alleged acts are considered definitive proof. It just may be harder than just our good intentions to set universal rules which can work in all cases before examining specific contexts. |
