You can, of course, make personal attacks in a subtle, roundabout rhetorical fashion that does not involve digital shouting and expletives, but resorting to the latter is a sure sign that you're dealing with someone with personality flaws that make whatever cause they purport to espouse look bad with their method of engagement, or is simply a troll seeking negative attention (as you surmised).
