Just because CLD was one of us, doesn't mean he could not do math. Just because CLD could do math, doesn't mean he was not one of us.
Some of the greatest minds were people, too. Just as are some of the simplest minds: a cat, for instance. (Well, maybe a poor example because cats are notoriously complicated people.) A suggestive indication: Imagine the year is 1897 and a ship's captain has begun a world cruise in a little sailboat - alone. (Yeah, I like sailing stories!) Imagine Capt. S. pulls into a very remote, yet populated, island in the southeast Pacific. The captain takes to enjoying long walks in the mountains on the island and, one day, invites a pretty little girl to go along with him. Treks such as these often take hours. Years later, Capt. S. writes of his adventures and happens to mention this walk with a pretty little girl. Nothing untoward is described yet you and I know how lovely these heavenly creatures can be. Probably nothing happened but it does make someone like me wonder. And, then, there's Arthur C. Clarke. |
