As you are seeing, being respected by the masses is not of any importance.

Even so, it is good to be respected by those who themselves have good character, and most of all it is important for a person to earn their own self-respect. Most people have a conscience, and most people suffer when they violate their own conscience, even if they do so with the approval of the world. Take care, of course, that you listen to the opinions of others in case they may offer a perspective that you missed, especially as the consequences of choices can be counterintuitive, but ultimately the most important respect to have is one's own. Do the best you can: no one can expect more.
