If I understand what you're saying reasonably well (meaning there's not too much hidden context), the answer for me was to find a place in this world that feels more like home and move. It's been almost ten years now, and it's brought me a sense of peace I never had in the States. The laws aren't particularly that different, but the people are and the culture is.

Maybe an alternative to internal exile?
