Of course it was a bit more complicated. The British, having a class based system with each class represented, presumed that was good enough to represent the American colonists of all classes. The Americans, dealing with a government that was out of touch with the needs of the people, thought that a local government that could be knowledgeable about and responsive to the needs of the people, would be superior.
