Researching pedophilia

I'm not sure about their being a "pass" - there's definitely no blanket requirement for researchers to report illegal activity in general that they come across, imagine the implications of that for studies in criminology, for example. It would be impossible to study gangs and a million other things.

The real problem with pedophilia is that an Institutional Review Board would never allow such a study, and if you went ahead anyway without their approval you would probably lose your job. E.g., there was this researcher that studied men in ongoing sexual relationships with boys that I had a long conversation with a long time ago, how did he "get away with it"? - it was the Netherlands in the 70's. He said that no such study would be remotely possible today for this reason - the IRB would never allow it. So there was this window of opportunity for such studies that is now closed and will probably not reopen for a very long time.
