Please forgive me for the example I am about to offer. It's just what came up in my head but I think it serves my purpose.

Consider, a little girl is sitting in front of me, and with Her permission, I take out my (very sharp) pocket knife, I cut Her arm for about 1 inch enough to draw a good flow of blood.

Is this abuse?

I'm sure the cops would arrest me immediately. Would you be upset?

Now, reconsider, that little girl has just been bitten by a very poisonous rattle snake. With Her permission, I take out my (very sharp) pocket knife, I make an incision for about 1 inch in Her arm exactly where the snake's fangs penetrated, enough to draw a good flow of blood. I then proceed to apply a suction cup (from a snake bite emergency rescue kit) to minimize the amount of poison injected.

Is this abuse?

I'm sure the cops would NOT arrest me... at all. Would you be upset at my rescuing the little girl?
