Safety in general would come out of running GNU/Linux (I recommend Debian), keeping Tor constantly up to date, and keeping it on the maximum security settings. Whether it's deep web or simply browsing the internet using Tor browser.

If you read articles about security breaches, it's generally people running Windows *and* running out-of-date versions of Tor. Or, predators using JavaScript exploits and the like. Low-hanging fruit is always the target.
