A single age of consent would not be unreasonable ...

... if violations were treated with the seriousness of traffic infractions, rather than with the seriousness of mass murder. You might recall a case where someone got put on the FBI Most Wanted list for ... an allegation that he had touched a boy's penis. Once. And the boy did not even remember the incident when questioned later. If violations were treated with the seriousness of traffic infractions, where consequences generally start with a warning and only work their way up to modest jail time if there is either a very serious violation or a continuous pattern of infractions serious enough to warrant multiple complaints, even I would be fine with that.

... if violations were confined to cases of actual sexual acts that might reasonably be expected to put a child at risk of STDs, pregnancy, or physical harm. I understand that an age of consent makes it easier to prosecute cases of rape or physical abuse, but I recall one case when a man got several years in prison for sucking on a girl's toes. Really? That's what they wanted an age of consent for?

... if the age of consent were set at zero.
