I agree with you in principle. But let me play Devil's Advocate:

A two year old with a dirty nose will push your hand away if you try to wipe Her nose; She wants it dirty, go away. Yet, as She reaches for a lump of wiggly jello and you push Her hand away, will She not try to reach around your hand to get at the fun looking food?
