In reply to Reading The Enchanter by Nabokov again... posted by griffith on Friday, April 12 2019 at 5:58:16PM

I read it two or three times when I was much younger, and earlier this year or last year I borrowed it from the library, but I did not finish it then.

After all those crime documentaries I have seen I understand that Margot and Alex Rex are just criminals, disgusting parasites, sadists, psychopaths, so it is not a pleasant book.

I will not read it again. Why should I? That Margot woman is an old cow.

That is what disturbs me in Nabokov: if you describe many cynics and psychopaths in your stories, the reader begins to feel that you are yourself a cynic and a psychopath. No, Humbert Humbert's hebephilia does not disturb me, but his cynicism does.

I have Lolita in my bookshelf, and some day I may read it again, but I am not interested in other novels of Nabokov. They are too dry.
