Don't hate me, but today I'd see John as less knowing than his son. He was cut loose pretty early from both parents. In some ways, this makes you learn things early. In other ways, this sets you loose into oblivion, due to the absence of parental grounding. Was this grounding so important? We could probably debate that forever.

I think John was dealing with an ego, but also had a rare ability to step outside of it as an observer. There can be few people who've been lost in this era who would be more interesting to see how they evolved into their later years than John Lennon. I can barely even imagine what he'd be thinking in old age today. Definitely a major loss to thinking humanity.
