You should really consider using Linux Mint or Ubuntu.

Windows 10 is nothing more than spyware, advertisement, and making its users a commodity to be sold. You can not make Windows 10 safe, or even safe-ish. Turn all the telemetry features off, install software that monitors and stops telemetry data from broadcasting, and it will still send data to Microsoft to be sold. You have no control over updates, which turn spyware back on and can make your computer unusable for 30-40 minutes without your consent. Microsoft is a hyper-user in Windows 10, and you will never be more than a user.

I've used Linux for more than 15 years, but had to use Windows on my important computers because Linux had bugs, annoyances, and could not use hardware efficiently. This is no longer the case. Mint and Ubuntu just work, and security and privacy is second to none. When I put my black hoodie on and scan my network, I can see all the open ports and exploit opportunities, and watch data leaking from "secured" Windows 10 machines, but there are no open ports on (default out of the box) Mint or Ubuntu machines, and I can not even determine what operating system they are running.

It's possible to secure a Windows 7 machine, if you are willing to invest the time. The end of support date for Windows 7 is January 14, 2020. I understand you are an old man like me, but I hope you will still be with us 8 months from now!!

Don't waste your time on Windows 10, unless your career requires it. Migrating from Window 7 to Linux Mint or Ubuntu is as easy as migrating to Windows 10, but using Windows 10 means you'll spend the rest of your life in a futile attempt trying to gain basic privacy and dignity, rather than doing more productive things.
