The element of irreducible rascality.

Embrace it. We all do, or else we're at odds with ourselves.

Who do we trust more: someone who casually breaks the law and admits it with a wink and a cunning grin, or someone who casually breaks the law but vigorously denies it - often including to themselves - in the interest of keeping up the appearance of trustworthiness?

No one is really judged by how closely they abide by the convoluted bloat of civil doctrine that's bound to be run into up, down, here, there, and every-fuckin'-where (and weighed, and occasionally dismissed in the interest of momentary pleasure or convenience or whatever-have-you, or, more often than not, relegated to oblivion).

What's really important is that we feel that you have a firm grasp on your own moral values, such that you're not in a position to rock our proverbial boats.

It should be such that we (including you) are implicitly aware that you could be very bad indeed - but you choose to be mostly good, with just enough bad mixed in to give us a show worth seeing, and to make us comfortable with our own.

We don't trust you if you insist that you're a saint - no sir.

Someone who gives away their moral compass to the state hasn't thought very much about morality, so we'll trust him about as far as he can be thrown (and back again) because he has an extremely limited understanding of what "bad" means for him. We sure as hell won't ask him to make decisions that he can't trust himself to make!

And if someone doesn't trust you because you choose to keep ownership of yours, they're probably just about as interesting to you as they are a threat - or else a liar. ;)

So, "bad" - what does it mean to you?

But we know you have an answer, so we don't actually need one.
