They do not make you more happy, they just make you less unhappy.
And being less unhappy is not the same as being more happy. :( I have always known this. When I was 20, I stopped smoking for one year. I used to say something to this effect: smoking is a disadvantage, but giving up smoking is not an advantage. (Smoking harms you, but giving up smoking does not benefit you.) Maybe a clumsy translation, but I try to tell what I thought then. Now that I am quite old I have noticed that I really have got rid of some problems, some negative character traits -- but am I any happier? No. Even the increased peace of mind just feels like boredom. |
