When I was young, I made a backpacking trek through the Near East. It took a while to get used to, but the toilets were simple holes in the ground. You had to crouch to defecate. Instead of TP, you were given a small can of water, which explains why locals and visitors never touched food with their left hand. Consequently, a common punishment was the removal of the right hand, which effectively made the person a social pariah, since they could never eat at any table.
