Just not better to not know about any given thing.
And no, I don't want to show a 3-year-old videos of people being executed. Nor do I want to tell her that executions are a thing. But I also wouldn't want her to say "Rainbow, tell me about execution?" because she's seen or heard (obviously) about executions somehow and my answer to be "GASP! Oh my - exe-what?! Oh dear... shh, honey, you're too little to hear about that." I want my answer to be, "What do you already know about it?" And she can tell me what she already knows, and I can base my answer on the nature of her understanding thus far, and then clarify that, to hopefully scaffold her to a better, more mature understanding. "Because when we know about things it makes them less scary right?" "Right." "Can I get a hug?" "Uppie hug!! Uppie hug!!" "Uppie hug? Okay." "Yayyy! Rainbow, I love you!" ~ Rainbowloom |
