In the process of researching mandatory reporting in the US, I ran across the following 2-week-old video, which I believe is relevant to this forum:

By and large the video is sympathetic to the plight of MAPs, especially regarding the lack of therapeutic treatment in places like the the US and Canada. However, what I did find abhorrent was the snarky and disdainful attitude of the video interviewer. His facial expressions and body language clearly communicated an attitude of disgust, as well as mistrust, of non-offending pedophiles. I find it deplorable that a reputable news organization such as VICE News would tolerate such blatant bias in its news reporting.

At one point the interviewer asks how can authorities trust a non-offending pedophile's admission that he will not offend. To his credit, the respondent, a licensed therapist in Germany, replied that in the total absence of any scientific methods to prove otherwise, the only choice is to take the pedophile at his word. The interviewer's snarky facial expression was clearly disapproving of that answer.

One of the more relevant findings communicated was that although an admission of pedophilia by itself is not a reason for mandatory reporting (in the US, for example), many therapists and counselors erroneously assume that every pedophile will someday offend, and thus pose an immediate risk to children, which, of course, results in a mandatory report. It is this heinous assumption which makes any MAP reluctant to disclose his or her proclivity to professionals.
