The problem in a nutshell

The problem with insanity is that it just plain does not make any logical sense.

Consider: in a civilian police action (and in some other applications), the use of hollow point ammunition is not only legal but desired.

The United States ratified the second (1907) Hague Convention IV-23, which says "To employ arms, projectiles, or material calculated to cause unnecessary suffering", similar to IV-3 of the first Convention. This referred to hollow point ammunition, among other things. For years the United States military respected this Convention and refrained from the use of expanding ammunition. The United States Army began production in 2018 of special purpose ammunition for the 9mm Parabellum. This was a jacketed hollow point bullet for use in situations where limited over-penetration of targets is necessary to reduce collateral damage.

After a high-profile mass shooting at a large law firm in San Francisco in 1993, media response against the manufacturer of the bullets used (Winchester) was swift. "This bullet kills you better", says one report; "its six razorlike claws unfold on impact, expanding to nearly three times the bullet's diameter".

Kills you better. And they objected to that.

In Vermont, someone as young as 16 can buy a handgun without any permit or parental permission, and then carry it around in their jeans or in a concealed fashion. So while those same 16-year-olds are barred from R-rated movies and bars, they can still buy deadly weapons.

If I go to Walmart and purchase a Star Wars movie for $5.00, am I only allowed to watch it once? Or, after watching it, am I not allowed to sell it to my neighbor since he has not seen it yet? Well, current laws allows me to watch that movie over and over in my own home. But if I share it with a bunch of other people (say, in a parking lot with friends), it becomes illegal. If I GIVE my movie to my neighbor, it's not illegal (in most states) but I would be breaking the law if my neighbor gave me money for it.

If I buy a newspaper and read it on a park bench, then leave it for someone else to read, it is legal. If I leave more than a few copies, I will be breaking the law.

In Florida, if you have an elephant, camel, or horse on the city streets, it's legal. But if one of them takes up a parking spot, you must pay the parking fee.

I read of this while I was in Car Sir Eighted. A man (I think it was in Rhode Island) was found guilty of possession of child pornography and sentenced. The images were normally legal considering the children were fully clothed and in normal every-day activities. However, the prosecution asked if the defendant found the images sexually appealing to which the defendant said they were. This, then, was the basis of his conviction. I'm pretty sure the conviction was appealed but I only read of the first trial.

Insanity is a legal term, though. Stupidity is not.

Finally, a man in the U.S. had twice kissed his young lover, but not on the lips of Her mouth. Because She was below the age of 18, each kiss was considered forcible sodomy which carried a possible life sentence. I won't release the man's name nor his nickname, but he is a contributor here. Uh... that may be against the rules, so I'll release the man's nickname, with his permission. You know him as Gimwinkle.

Regarding this post and every post I write about myself describing my past, be advised that I was tried, convicted, sentenced to a very long time in prison, and I served the complete sentence. Be further advised that I am no longer practicing illegal activities today and that I refrain from doing so by my own choice, not from fear of legal entanglements or society's outrage. I remain crime free because I choose to.
