The white slavery moral panic of the 1880s in Britain pretended to be about "saving" women from slavery, but of course it was actually about attacking prostitution for the benefit of wives who didn't like the competition. Many of the prostitutes were young, which is why the first action against "white slavery" was to repurpose the age of consent (originally intended to protect children from prosecution) and raise it to twelve.
In attacking these prostitutes they also implied that any man who hired such a prostitute was the moral equivalent of a slaver. Baldur |
