In the video, Springsteen plays a working class automobile mechanic with an attractive, married (ring on finger!), very well-to-do, mostly unseen female customer who brings her vintage 1956 Ford Thunderbird in for frequent servicing. So, she has a drivers' licence which would suggest that she is a full grown adult. So then she tells him that she lives way out in the hills and doesn't want him to bring the repaired car out to her. Yet, we see her handing him a set of FOUR keys on a carabiner. That model T'Bird had only one key. The other three keys must have been house keys. She was inviting him over for an affair.
Keep in mind that, prior to the making of the video, the song had been popular but slightly controversial for about three years. The video was designed to demonstrate a more socially acceptable meaning. |
