I worry that AI will eventually enable the state to read our minds.

That's the least of our worries.

Look at how we live with ants. For the most part, we live and let live. But the moment the ants become a nuisance to us, we exterminate them without a thought to morality of taking life. Now, apply that to the "Singularity" of an AI group so advance in intelligence that we can't even imagine that level. Suddenly, we pitiful pests called humans are exterminated simply for being pests.
