However, as red herrings go, we were discussing the cat, not the person with the HCL.

Yes, absolutely: This generally characterizes nurturing parent/child interactions, in which cognitive immaturity often prevents the latter from comprehending the relevant facts necessary to give informed consent.

Mommy or Daddy is going to slap your hand if you try to touch that stove again. (Mommy's or Daddy's actions would be justifiable. As you pointed out.)

(Ha ha, for a second example, I have to change the animal!) The poor (unknowing) dog really, really wants that chocolate bar and you (knowingly) refuse to give it! How horrible, thinks the dog. I know what I want, he says.

Nevertheless, as we were discussing consent, all the dog (or the little girl) knows is what is wanted and consent is willingly given. The next point is the crux of the matter. The Unknowing demands to know "WHY?" Consent is being given! The Knowing knows why but this point is irrelevant to the argument. Consent is being given.

The responsibility then falls to the Knowing to create Informed Consent. Obviously, with the dog or cat, education would be impossible. For the little girl, though, education is obviously a logical next step.

(Warning: I am so sleepy right now. I'm not sure which side of the discussion I am arguing. I'm just yammering.)
