Obviously, rape IS a big deal - but the idea that it is necessarily the end of one's life and happiness is not only absurd, it frequently does more harm to victims than rape itself. We have data on this: outcomes for rape victims are much worse in cultures that place a high value on sexual purity and believe that rape victims are necessarily harmed for life, than in cultures which have a more relaxed atttitude towards sex.
