Both of social and religious conservatives, and libertarians and AnCaps by the Right; and feminists and LGBT+ by the Left; have become more puritanical over the last 20 years or so.

The broad Right outright defended the Branch Davidians even though nobody ever put in doubt that a lot of pedophilic action was going on. The broad Left also outright defended the Children of God in spite of their pedophilic behaviors and philosophies.

What happened since? Scandals over scandals: the Catholic Church cases; the mainstreaming of the Internet and with it a significant increase in access both to actual KP, to the many model sites there used to be, and to socnets where Girls posted their own pics; the rise of intersectional feminism and with it the view that pedophilia is a manifestation of patriarchy; closely associated with that, the trafficking hoax pushed by both the feminist Left and the social conservative Right; another manifestation of which is the fight against sex tourism which again joins people from those two ideologies together; isolated but relevant cases like Mark Foley, Jack McClellan, the PNVD, the FLDS Church, Muslim and Hindu cases of child marriage, Jimmy Savile, Jerry Sandusky, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski, the Guatemalan orphanage, and I can think of even more; and more complex scandals such as Marc Dutroux, Pizzagate, Jeffrey Epstein which led fo the whole Me Too case set, the Rotherham case set, and Wayfair, which except for Rotherham involve famous people from politics and entertainment.

So we devolved from a status where both social conservatives and social liberals were moving into acceptance to a status where both are moving into persecution of pedophiles.

History tells me this won't last forever; but if I used to expect the next 10 to 20 years, now I expect 50 years at least.

What may lead to this reversing faster would be, one, if many people came out as having had sex as children and neither regret it at all nor see it as abusive it whether then or now; two, case fatigue if there are so many scandals that people lose interest (this is happening with the coronavirus as we speak, but of course the coverage of the disease is also far greater than that of pedophilia cases); or three, whole generations raised on mutual sexting leading to adult generations not caring that kids are sexually assertive or active and realizing that they can be sexually assertive and active out of their own volition, consensually and without being subject to force or coercion. But neither of these is guaranteed to happen.
