I'm not sure why it's necessary to "pretend," exactly. To me it's more like your political beliefs or religious beliefs, or lack thereof - everyone has them, but no really discusses them. So I don't feel like I pretend anything when I'm around other adults - I have a sexual orientation, I don't discuss it just as they (almost always) don't mention theirs.
